💧 Innovative Water Infrastructure Unveiled
To address growing water needs and support urban aesthetics in the Dholera SIR Smart City, planners initiated a 15 km artificial river. As of now, 6 km of this man-made waterway—110 m wide and 15 m deep—has been completed and has begun to spill overflow with monsoon water
This new river serves a dual purpose: it’s both a functional reservoir for water harvesting and a planned urban amenity featuring bridges, landscaping, and public spaces.
⚙️ Engineering Feat & Symbolic Relevance
Modeled after mythological inspirations like the Ganga’s descent by King Bhagirath, this river projects India’s blend of heritage respect and cutting-edge civic solutions. Spanning 25 km² activation zones, the project reflects PM Modi’s smart city vision—pioneering greenfield infrastructure during a global pandemic
Three such artificial rivers are expected across Dholera, framing urban zones and supporting sustainability.
🔄 Functional & Environmental Benefits
- Rainwater Harvesting: Embedded blocks and tunnels under the 72 km road network channel runoff into the river, reducing flooding and replenishing groundwater.
- Water Security: Works in harmony with desalination and local treatment plants to ensure drinking water supply for the city’s villages and future population.
- Eco‑recreation and Biodiversity: Plans include riverside promenades, marine parks, and green buffers—boosting community wellness and ecological resilience
🌟 Strategic Urban Value
- Flood Resilience: Acts as a buffer during monsoons, reducing pressure on stormwater systems.
- Iconic City Identity: Enhances urban branding and boosts land values near the waterway.
- Smart Infrastructure Synergy: Ties into IoT-driven water systems, smart utilities, and green urban landscapes—fulfilling the smart-city concept.
✅ Takeaway
The launch of this 6 km artificial river marks a key step in Dholera SIR’s transformation into a sustainable, smart urban ecosystem. It strengthens water resources with monsoon capture, enriches public spaces with green infrastructure, and exemplifies visionary planning. As work continues toward the full 15 km stretch (and two more rivers), Dholera is setting new standards for future-ready urban design.
